When to call a lawyer today
Most of the plan can wait a day or two. These situations cannot: call a lawyer today, or legal aid if you cannot afford one.
Money is moving right now
Large withdrawals, transfers out of joint accounts, new loans against the house. Only a court can freeze assets, and a lawyer can ask for an order quickly.
A court case was opened, or you were served papers
Papers come with a deadline to respond, often a few weeks. Missing it can let the other side win by default, and some states apply automatic orders on filing.
You need a protective order
An advocate or the court comes first. The Hotline helps you plan, and explains how protective orders work in your state.
A bankruptcy notice arrived, or bankruptcy is being considered
Once a case is filed, an automatic stay stops most collection, and some payments made before can be undone. Ask a bankruptcy lawyer before paying or moving any debt.
A debt collector is suing you
Answer by the deadline on the papers, even if the debt is not yours. Otherwise the court can enter a default judgment, which can lead to wage garnishment.
Your partner has died
Debts are usually paid from the estate. Ask an estate lawyer before paying or promising to pay any of their debts.
