Own & Owe

Privacy

In plain language: what we collect (almost nothing), what Google receives through our ad tag, where it is, for how long, and what we could hand over.

What stays on your device

Your answers, inventory, timeline, calculator inputs and generated PDF. They are stored in your browser, encrypted with your access code, and never sent to us. We cannot read them, reset them or recover them.

What reaches a server

  • Google Ads: every page of this site loads Google’s advertising tag (gtag.js). On the first page you open, before any question is asked and whatever you answer later, it stores a cookie (_gcl_au) and a browser storage entry (_gcl_ls) for this site, kept for 90 days, and Google may read or set its own cookies. Google receives the address of the pages you open (an article’s address names its topic), the page that sent you here, your IP address, your browser and device details and those identifiers, and may link them to your Google account if you are signed in. Google uses this to measure our ads and, with the settings we use, to show Own & Owe ads later to people who visited this site, on other sites and apps, including on a device someone else also uses. Google handles this under its own policy. You can turn off ad personalization in My Ad Center; a private window, closed when you are done, drops these cookies and the storage entry.
  • Payment: handled by Stripe. Stripe collects your card details and an email address. We store the Stripe session id and a short purchase ID derived from it, and receive a random device id (created in your browser, not tied to your identity) when you pay and when the payment is verified, to issue the unlock on that device and process refunds. Your situation is never sent.
  • Gift codes: a hash of the code, its status and up to three random device ids, so one code works on your phone and your computer.
  • Usage counts: how many people reached each step, per day. No cookies and no identifiers in our own counts. To limit abuse, a short-lived hashed counter per connection exists for a few minutes and is never stored in clear. Our hosting provider keeps standard access logs (IP address, time, page requested) for a limited period, as any web host does; we do not use them and they are not linked to anything you type.
  • Unlock check: once a day, when the app is open and online, a paid file asks our server whether its purchase was refunded. Only the unlock token is sent, never anything about your situation; without a network the file simply stays open.
  • Refund requests: your purchase ID, the reason, what you choose to write and an email address (optional, except for a technical problem), kept until handled.

What we would hand over if a court asked

Nothing about your situation, because we do not have it. Payment data is at Stripe and what the ad tag collected is at Google; we hold no copy of your answers, your inventory or your file.

California notice

Effective date of this policy: 2026-10-20. Our own usage counts do not track visitors, but a third party does collect information through this site: the Google Ads tag on every page lets Google collect information about your visits here over time and across other sites and apps, as described above. A browser “Do Not Track” signal does not stop the Google tag. California residents may request the categories of personal information we hold about them, which, for most users, is none; what the Google tag collects is held by Google.

Email

None unless you give an address. At most one neutral follow-up at 30 days: “Was your lawyer able to use the file?”
